Scarring

What is scarring?

  • Scarring is the body's natural healing process when your skin has been cut or damaged. They can form as a result of accidents, diseases, skin conditions such as acne, or surgeries.

How do scars form?

  • Scars appear when a tough, fibrous protein called collagen forms when the body repairs a wound. As scar tissue begins to form, it may appear red, raised, and hard, but over time should fade, flatten, and soften.

Where concerns are associated with scarring?

  • Almost everyone will develop a scar at some point in their life but some scars may not completely fade away or appear more prominently. Other scars may be itchy or painful.
