Hyperpigmentation

What is hyperpigmentation?

  • Hyperpigmentation is usually characterised by patches of skin which are usually darker than the surrounding areas. Common types of hyperpigmentation include 'age-spots', freckles, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - and it can occur anywhere on the body.

Why does hyperpigmentation tend to happen?

  • Hyperpigmentation's usually due to cells producing too much melanin, either because they've become damaged or they're trying to protect the skin. Melanin is the pigment which gives skin its colour. It can be caused by injury, skin inflammation, sun damage, abnormal skin growths, hormone changes, pregnancy or other medical conditions.

How does hyperpigmentation tend to appear?

  • Hyperpigmentation tends to appear any number of ways including brown, tan or black spots or large or darkened patches.
