Acne

What is acne?

  • Acne is a very common skin condition caused by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pus-filled spots (pustules). It can range from a few spots on the face, neck, back and chest to something more severe.

When does acne normally start?

  • It usually starts during puberty as sebaceous (oil-producing) glands are sensitive to hormone changes. Whilst common in teenagers, it can also develop for the first time in people in their late twenties and older.

What concerns are normally associated with acne?

  • The main one is scarring (which can impact confidence and self-esteem).
